Email and anti-spam policy

Last updated

This policy sets out how Nooryva uses your email address: how you get on a list, what we measure, and how you get off. It applies to our newsletter and to any campaign we send. It is deliberately specific, because “we respect your privacy” is not a policy.

We never buy, rent or scrape addresses

Every address on our list was typed in by the person who owns it, on this website. We do not buy lists, we do not rent them, we do not swap them with anybody, and we do not harvest addresses from directories, trade shows or company websites. If you have never given us your address, you will never hear from us.

How you join a list

You join by ticking a box and submitting a form. The box is never ticked in advance, and subscribing is never bundled with anything else: agreeing to our contacting you about an enquiry is one tick, and asking for our emails is a different tick that you can leave alone.

Where double confirmation is switched on, we then send you one email asking you to confirm. Until you confirm, you are not on the list and you hear nothing further. That single email is the only thing an unconfirmed address ever receives from us.

What we measure, and what you control

  • Where we measure whether you opened an email, agreeing to it is part of subscribing. The box you tick to subscribe says so in its own words, and it is never ticked for you. You can turn open measurement off at any time from your preferences page without unsubscribing.
  • We do record which links get clicked, so that we know which subjects were worth writing about. Unsubscribing ends this along with everything else.
  • We mark machine opens as machine opens. Many mail providers now fetch images on your behalf before you have read anything. We record that separately rather than counting it as you, because a figure that counts a proxy as a reader is a lie we would only be telling ourselves.

We do not track what you do on the website afterwards and tie it back to your address.

How you leave

Every email we send carries an unsubscribe link that works in one click, without a sign-in, without a survey, and without asking you to confirm twice. It is in every email, not only some.

Unsubscribing takes effect immediately. Your address then goes onto a do-not-contact list, and that list is checked before any campaign goes out. We keep that one record precisely so that we can honour your decision: an address forgotten entirely is an address a future campaign could reach again by accident.

You can also change what you receive, rather than stopping altogether, from the preferences link in any of our emails.

Addresses that stop working

When a mail server tells us an address no longer exists, we stop sending to it. Where a server reports a temporary problem we try again, and if it keeps failing we stop. If you mark one of our emails as spam, we treat that as an instruction to stop and add you to the do-not-contact list, whatever the unsubscribe link says.

What we send, and how often

We send notes about the trade: commodities, routes, customs and the practical business of moving goods. We do not send daily mail, and we would rather send less and have it read. Emails that answer something you asked us, such as an acknowledgement of a quote request, are not marketing and are sent whether or not you subscribed.

Who sends them

Our emails are sent by our own system through a mail server we control. We do not pass your address to a marketing platform that reuses it for anybody else.

What we hold, and for how long

We keep your address, your first name if you gave it, the language you were reading in, the page you subscribed from, and a dated record of each time you subscribed, confirmed or unsubscribed. That record is what lets us show, if ever asked, that the emails you received were ones you asked for. The privacy policy sets out the full picture and your rights over it.

If we get it wrong

If you receive an email from us that you did not ask for, tell us at legal@nooryva.com and we will find out how it happened and tell you. That is a defect on our side, and we would rather know.

Which language applies

This policy is published in every language this site is published in. If the versions disagree, the English version applies.
